According to BBC, Facebook just changed its friend logo. I can't find either the new or the old image on Facebook myself, so I can't confirm if it is true. However, here is the reported new image.
On the other hand, here is the old image, which was replaced:
The woman who made this change explained the problem with the old logo, as follows:
"As a woman, educated at a women's college it was hard not to read into the symbolism of the current icon; the woman... was not in a position to lean in."
I vehemently object to her misogynistic assumption that a persyn with broad shoulders and a combover is automatically a man and that a persyn with a delicate neck and a bob cut is automatically a woman. How does she know that she isn't dealing with a transgendered individual that hasn't finished transitioning? Maybe there are multiple transgendered persyns in that image. Did she ask the artist who created that work what s/he intended to convey through the image? For all I know, she's moved the woman to the back and the man to the front.
Regardless, she needs to apologize to women everywhere for assuming that they have certain body types and haircuts, thereby subtly reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes and patriarchal oppression.
