A scandalous God...

Clark Pinnock doesn't like what the Bible says about the exclusivity of salvation through Christ.

Ben Witherington doesn't like what the Bible says about eternal punishment in Hell.

Of course, each of these individuals volubly claims the Bible doesn't actually teach the thing they dislike, that they have come to understand the true meaning of Scripture in these places.

But in the midst of such varied specific dislikes, let's just be honest. The real problem is the sovereignty of God. We hate a sovereign God: we're scandalized by God's sovereign authority anywhere and everywhere it appears. We hate election. We hate the imputation of Adam's sin. We hate that the Israelites killed the Canaanites. We hate David laying a measuring line against his enemies. We hate Paul claiming authority. We hate the idea of judgment and Hell. We hate every last bit of it....

Make no mistake, though we use lots of big words and profound concepts to justify the different things we don't like in Scripture, God simply hears us saying, "I won't worship you."
