Palm Sunday: Calvin on using our bodies in worship...

The inward attitude certainly holds first place in prayer, but outward signs, kneeling, uncovering the head, lifting up the hands, have a twofold use. The first is that...  - John Calvin

Vice President Pence and the Billy Graham rule...

A FB friend just asked my thoughts on the thrashing Vice President Michael Pence has been receiving for observing "the Billy Graham rule" in his relations with women other than his wife. What is the rule? I mention it in this Baylyblog post from January 20, 2005. First the post, then some comments on the present controversy...

Audio recordings from Shepherds Conference now available...

not_ashamed_0.pngThis past February, Clearnote Church, Bloomington hosted our annual Shepherds Conference. This year our subject was "Not Ashamed: Ministry in a Post-Obergefell World." The entire world is talking about the beauty of this and that sexual perversion, so the pressures on Christians to join in the work of removing these sins' shame is intense. Will the church be ashamed of the shame God has attached to these sins, turning away from His words to join the gay pride parade?

So we had an idea: why not hold a conference that might be helpful to the saints in this evil day?

Click here to listen to the audio recordings. We pray that they will be strengthening to you.

Baptists' nuclear option...

Some lives never make sense until we realize the man can't get out of his nuclear reactor mode. The choices of such men concerning their religion only begin to be comprehensible when we understand this man is one of the many today who can never get far enough away from the indignities he suffered being raised Baptist. The simplicity of the Biblical Christian faith his father and mother subjected him to as a child is so embarrassing he can't seem to do enough to heal his humiliation.

He keeps running and running away, almost always toward that first choice of the superstitious man with a tender conscience—sacramentalism. Typically, these men start transitioning by becoming Presbyterian. If their new Presbyterian pastor and elders are themselves former Baptists also, the man may find his sacramentalist itch scratched sufficiently that he's able to stay in his new church. If his new pastor and elders are historically Reformed, though, and have read the Reformers, after a little while the man will not be able to stand the Reformed church's fencing of the Lord's Table and he'll start to howl in anger over...

What people complain about after worship...

Yesterday after morning worship, one of the men of our congregation was mad at me for exhorting the congregation to worship God with more self-forgetful zeal than March Madness fans. He loves sports and thinks I don't, and that my exhortation was spiteful towards him and his fellow keepers of the cult.

I tried to reassure him I was just as idolatrous as the next guy. I don't think it softened him.

Now I try another tack.

Should we take basketball and bracketologists seriously? Umm.

To help your answer, here's the best bracket in our Bayly family...
