Daddy is blessed...

Just received this pic along with an e-mail of thanks for writing Daddy Tried. Ain't she beautiful? I'd tell you her name but I want to protect her own and her parents' privacy. Congratulations to the proud father and joyful mother!

Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. (Psalms 127:3)

Being a dad is hard...

We need your help...

The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. (Galatians 6:6)

Hey Baylyblog readers! Would you please help us publicize Daddy Tried? Also the posts you read here on Baylyblog?

The Apostle Paul says those who are taught should share all good things with those who teach them. The good thing I'd like to ask of you is your help reaching the church with the difficult things we write on Baylyblog. Also the books we publish.

The most recent one is a book teaching Christian fatherhood titled Daddy Tried. John Frame isn’t a flatterer and he says...

An open letter on spanking...

This is in response to a comment just left under the post The Good Father: Fight the good fight (3)... Among other things, the commenter wrote:

"I think spanking a child due to real or perceived manipulation is excessive. Remaining calm and in control- being the adult is imperative here.”

I respond:

Dear Mrs. P.,

It's good to separate the world into Christians and pagans. It clarifies things, especially arguments. So how do we know the difference between Christians and pagans?

There are a number of questions to ask, such as who does a man (or woman) believe Jesus is? What does a man or woman believe Jesus' work was?  Who raised Jesus from the dead? Who killed Jesus? And so on.

Sometimes, though, other questions are needed that prior generations took for granted. For two-thousand years, no one denied...

A good Christmas gift for fathers...

Pastoral care is not a high priority in the church today and it's hard to give it from a distance. The Apostle Paul did it through his epistles and most of the New Testament is simply the permanent record of pastoral care by pastors who lived at a distance from those they loved and led, done by means of letter writing in a day when texts, FB, and Skype didn't exist.

Daddy Tried is my own letter providing pastoral care to fathers.1 New fathers who year by year are welcoming their newborn sons and daughters into the world; and also old ones who year by year are welcoming their grandsons and granddaughters into the world; both ages of fathers are the men I want to encourage to walk their fatherhood by faith with love.

Maybe your husband or the men of your church lack anyone caring for them, personally, as they raise their daughters and sons? Maybe no one exhorts, admonishes, or rebukes them with great patience? Maybe no one encourages them to not grow discouraged at the hard, hard work...

Pro-Life Podcast on Daddy Tried...

You may want to give a listen to this podcast by Allen County/Indiana Right to Life. It's a help when the interviewer has read the book before the interview, which Abigail Eschelbach had done—and I thank her. Pass the podcast on to others and tell them to buy the book. Each day I hear of others who have been helped by reading Daddy Tried, both men and women. Abigail's response is typical. At the end of the interview, she starts to say "I really enjoyed the book," but stops to correct herself—"well, I'm not sure 'enjoy' is the right word."

She's right. I've enjoyed C. S. Forester, and to a lesser degree, Patrick O'Brian. I enjoyed all the books on shepherding, sheep, and sheepdogs I read the past couple of years. But I loved...

Daddy Tried: fathers and abortion...

Since the release of Daddy Tried, I've been doing interviews and this weekend one of them will air on a few stations here in Hoosierland. The interview dealt with how fathers contribute to a culture of death or life. We spoke particularly about fathers and abortion and euthanasia.

The interview was done by Abigail Eschelbach, communications director of the Ft. Wayne area's Allen County Right to Life. Here's a list of the stations and times of broadcast. Most of the stations are in the Ft. Wayne area, but there are also stations in Bryan OH, South Bend, Noblesville, Indy, and Bloomington. Give a listen.

Daddy Tried interview on Wayne Shepherd's "First Person"...

A couple weeks ago, I had the privilege of talking with Wayne Shepherd about my book on fatherhood, Daddy Tried. Although we have common friends, Wayne and I hadn’t met.

Wayne hosts "First Person," a well-respected interview show that runs on 200-some radio stations. Wayne reminded me of Charlie Rose. Calm, perceptive, and interested, he’d read the book and his questions were helpful. So yes, I very much enjoyed our conversation.

Give a listen to Wayne's interview. First Person will broadcast this Saturday or Sunday. Chicago's WMBI (90.1 FM) will run it Saturday at 2:30 PM Central Time (time corrected). For other locations, here's a list of the stations and times.
