(Tim) Each week, our church has a pickup soccer game at an elementary school near an apartment complex where a number of Muslim law school students live. When we're playing, one or more of the men (and sometimes their wives and children) come over to watch, and occasionally to play. Always, we talk afterward inviting them over for dinner and to church Lord's Day morning. A week and a half ago, one of the men came to both Sunday school and church.
Most of the men are from Turkey, but one is Liberian. During a conversation, the subject of Senator Barack Obama's faith came up and the Liberian gentleman said, "Barack Obama's a Christian, isn't he?"
"No, he's not a Christian," I answered.
"But doesn't he go to a Christian church?" he asked in some confusion.
"Well yes, he holds membership in a church that claims to be Christian, but it's not...
His church is part of a denomination that's militantly pro-sodomy and pro-abortion. They believe in killing little babies when they're in their mother's womb. Surely you of all people, having come through the great slaughter within your nation, understand that followers of Jesus Christ must protect the weak and vulnerable--not kill them. No, neither Senator Obama nor his church are Christian. They're religious, yes; but their religion has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus Christ Who gave His life on the Cross to save us. He didn't demand that we die to save Him."
Yes, the conversation got even more interesting after this, but the point needing to be made over and over again by believers is that neither Senator Obama nor his pro-baby killing denomination are "Christian." They're certainly religious in the manner that all almost every last Democrat and many, many Republicans are religious. But Christian?
Absolutely not.
If you don't understand why it's important to deny the label
"Christian" to the denomination known as the UCC--what its resident
semi-evangelical theologian Don Bloesh refers to as
"Unitarians Considering Christ"--get a copy of J. Gresham Machen's Christianity and Liberalism and read it.
And while you're waiting for it to arrive from Amazon, consider these words from the Triune God:
There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood... (Proverbs 6:16, 17)
They did not destroy the peoples, As the LORD commanded them, But they mingled with the nations And learned their practices, And served their idols, Which became a snare to them. They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons, And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with the blood. Thus they became unclean in their practices, And played the harlot in their deeds. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people And He abhorred His inheritance. Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, And those who hated them ruled over them. (Psalms 106:34-41)
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “You shall also say to the sons of Israel: ‘Any man from the sons of Israel or from the aliens sojourning in Israel who gives any of his offspring to Molech, shall surely be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with stones. ‘I will also set My face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given some of his offspring to Molech, so as to defile My sanctuary and to profane My holy name. ‘If the people of the land, however, should ever disregard that man when he gives any of his offspring to Molech, so as not to put him to death, then I Myself will set My face against that man and against his family, and I will cut off from among their people both him and all those who play the harlot after him, by playing the harlot after Molech.'" (Leviticus 20:1-5)
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10)
I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES. (1 Corinthians 5:9-13)
Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying. (Revelation 22:15)
This abortion is serious business with Almighty God.
