On the day she gave birth to her newborn son who has Down syndrome, Governor Palin sent an e-mail to family members and close friends. Written as if it came from God, Gov. Palin signed the e-mail, "Trig's Creator, Your Heavenly Father." In her e-mail, Palin wrote: "Many people will express sympathy, but you don't want or need that,
because Trig will be a joy. You have to trust me on this. Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this
mixed-up world you live in down there on Earth. Trig is no different,
except he has one extra chromosome."
(Tim) So Senator McCain's picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. David and I slightly disagree on this. Roughly speaking, here's David's thought...
Putting Gov. Palin on the ticket is a sign of Senator McCain's weakness. His motivation likely had to do with thinking a woman would pull in Senator Clinton's "women's vote." There's no chance of that. Pastor Rick Warren was right when he said Senator Obama has almost no chance of winning the Bible-believing Christian vote given his advocacy of child-murder. So Gov. Palin won't add any Republican votes to Senator McCain's column; we were already on board. Holding our noses, but on board.
So then, if it won't add any Republican votes, does it stand a chance of adding Democratic ones?
No, because abortion is too important to the constituencies of Senator Obama and Clinton, also. (Tim adds: Make no mistake about it: The members of the weaker sex who supported Senator Clinton share among themselves a desperate denial of their own blood-guilt for the murder of their unborn children. As Joe Sobran said years ago, "Guilt over abortion is the engine that drives the feminist movement." God's mercy to repentant child-murderers is a significant part of what drives the pro-life movement, also.)
Then, putting Gov. Palin on the ticket was unwise. She's woefully inexperienced and will gain Senator McCain nothing he didn't already have.
Where do I differ with these arguments? Nowhere; David's made good points. But I'd like to add something.
Several times on this blog Governor Palin's pro-life commitments have been commended--most recently here in a post we ran on Mrs. John (Cindy) McCain's compassion for children. In that post I noted Gov. Palin's recent expression of thanksgiving to God for the gift of her newborn son, Trig, who has Down's Syndrome.
So what I'd like to add to David's strategic thinking is a little heart gratitude to the Republican Party for finally placing on their national ticket a candidate who's actually, really, and truly pro-life. Governor Palin may be inexperienced; she certainly is a self-described feminist (and no, that's not good according to God's Word and order); Alaska is a long way from the Beltway; and so on.
But bottom line? Gov. Palin made the choice refused by four out of five American women who, finding out their in utero child has Down Syndrome, murder that child. Gov. Palin carried her precious child to term, gave birth to him, breastfed him in the Governor's office, and praised our "Heavenly Father" for this "perfect life."
