(David) A few weeks back I mentioned the deafening silence at this year's General Assembly of academic supporters of N. T. Wright and the New Perspective on Paul during the debate over the ad interim report on Federal Vision and New Perspective theology--and I asked critics of FV theology if they would go after academic supporters of New Perspective teaching as firmly and tenaciously as they've gone after FV proponents.
Well here (thanks, Tim Varner) in a streak of blazing courage three months after the battle one such academic supporter finally finds his voice, or at least, sort of...
Without actually endorsing FV or NPP himself, this professor at RTS Orlando not only speaks against General Assembly's adoption of the ad interim report, he chides as presumptuous those who oppose women preachers (at least in mainline denominations) and he charges those who oppose N. T. Wright with sucking their careers out of the body of this champion of the Pauline corpus.
Unfortunately, comments on the post make clear that some within the PCA are willing to overlook such chaff so long as they get their bowlful of wheaties in the end. You give me paedocommunion, I'll give you women preachers....
Who ever said politics makes strange bedfellows?
If men like Dr. Kidd get a pass from their presbyteries--and especially from the PCA's FV critics--then the FV report with all its sturm and drang is the sound of one hand clapping. This man is teaching future PCA pastors, FV foes. And what he's saying is worse on almost every level than what FVers say. He actually thinks these issues aren't worth the fight they've stirred. Give me a diehard FVer any day over a man too clean to dirty his hands in battle.
